This is the Key

This is the Key from Come Hither, edited by Walter de la Mare.

This is the Key of the Kingdom. In that Kingdom is a city;
In that city is a town;
In that town there is a street;
In that street there winds a lane;
In that lane there is a yard;
In that yard there is a house;
In that house there waits a room;
In that room an empty bed;
And on that bed a basket–A basket of sweet flowers

Of flowers, of flowers;
A basket of sweet flowers.

Flowers in a Basket;
Basket on the bed;
Bed in the chamber;
Chamber in the house;
House in the weedy yard;
Yard in the winding lane;
Lane in the broad street;
Street in the high town;
Town in the city;
City in the Kingdom–
This is the Key to the Kingdom.
Of the Kingdom this is the Key.

Go all the way to the core and what lies there? A basket of sweet flowers. So simple. So beautiful. So innocent. So pure.

A very dear friend of mine set this poem to music a few years ago, and I’ve had the opportunity to perform it on several occasions. I thought of it today when I was attempting to conjure up a clever blog. Here’s how it began: “In the Queen-dom between ‘doormat’ and ‘diva’ lives a very powerful Goddess named Risky Bitchiness.”

From there, I was going to go on to say how I’ve noticed a pattern in my life of going back and forth between not speaking up for myself to being, shall we say, a little overly feisty. (Yes, I’m a Libra and the scales are rarely as balanced as I’d like for them to be!) After a few recent visits to the hospital for some medical tests, I was going to justify siding with the Diva. I mean, it’s better to be a little demanding to get what you need than leave the Doctor’s office in tears without having any answers, right? I mean, it’s the Holidays and one has to set boundaries, right? Right?

Yes, but…maybe, just maybe, there’s another way. A way of being and doing that allows our thoughts, actions and words to flow freely and lovingly from us.

Go all the way to the core and what lies there? A basket of sweet flowers. So simple. So beautiful. So innocent. So pure.

risked it ALL and moved to the cornfields of West Central Illinois where she found her dream man and her dream job. She can hardly wait to see what the Universe has in store for the rest of her life and is even more excited to see what happens on everyone else's journeys!! Let's share in each other's joys and sorrows.

    I always thoroughly enjoyed performing “The Key of the Kingdom” with you and Mariénne! At the center of it all is beauty.

    Thank you for the sweet reminder! I have lost sight of my core lately as I have been repeatedly swamped by Ego and its domain. I intend to tip my scales back in the direction of Spirit leading. After all, tis the season to renew, right?
