In December, I wrote about being eyeball deep in risk. This month, I want to share with you a letter that my son wrote to me on Valentine’s Day. (Don’t y’all tell on me, cuz he’d be embarrassed.)
Good afternoon, Moms,
Wal-Mart didn’t have a card for you that said the things I wanted to say to you and I didn’t think you’d want another stuffed animal, so this is what I planned for you (and some cleaning, as well.)
I wanna say thank you for not giving up on me. And I’m still sorry for the past 7 months. I plan to never do some stuff like that ever again. I have had the best last 2 weeks and I owe it to you.
If you would have gave up I probably would still be doing stupid, stupid stuff with that female and I’d probably be miserable. Thank you for staying on my ass, and I’m sorry it too so long to make the right decision.
I love you, and have a Happy Valentine’s Day.
Written on a simple piece of wide-ruled notebook paper, this letter is a keeper, for sure. And yes, I’ve re-read it about a hundred times since.
I’ll also risk reporting that this same child of mine has gone from failing first semester to having 4 As, 1 B and only 2 Fs (Geometry and Physiology) at the moment. And tomorrow will mark a month since I’ve had to have the police escort ‘that female’ off my property.
Finally, I’ll risk saying I think we may have turned an important corner.
Suzanne Bird-Harris would like to say she made the leap from Corporate America to web coach / WordPress developer on her own terms...but no, she lost her job after the CEO ran off with the 401K funds and went to jail. So, she started her own business with 3 kids, 2 dogs and a cat in tow on Dec. 6, 2002. It's been a wild ride, worth every risk, and she now proudly deems herself "pyschologically unemployable".

Way to hang in there Mom! Watching our children grow and learn (often by making mistakes) is both joyous and painful.
That’s a reminder that we all get to the other side- we just have to hang in there. It’s what I keep reminding myself of. That letter is definitely a keeper.
Oh, Suzanne, this is great news. Congratulations! And this note certainly is a keeper – as are you!!!
Precious! With all the challenges that kids can bring, one letter like this makes it all worthwhile.
Suzanne, that took my breath away. Thank you.
