I’m writing this blog post early (on May 26th) because I’ll actually be out in the world taking risks when it’s due to be published (on the 31st).
I have been a “craftsy” person most of my life. The types of crafts I have done over the years have varied and changed and currently include crocheting, tie-dyeing, paper making, a bit of jewelry making, and – my passion – quilting. I’m not very good at the quilting in that I don’t do complicated quilt blocks, my points and corners rarely match, etc., but I love doing it! The risk I’m taking next week is that I am attending a week-long quilted jacket/coat class (it’s up to each participant what length the finished product will be) at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. There are actually a myriad of risks involved in that one statement:
- the risk of being there an entire week and not knowing anyone there before I go
- the risk of getting to know the people in my class whom I don’t yet know
- the risk of using my very expensive sewing machine which still intimidates me, despite the fact that I’ve had it a couple of years
- the risk of being with classmates who might be MUCH better quilters than I (and, as a result, might be judgmental)
- the risk that my hopes for the class (which I’ve been anticipating and looking forward to for almost a year) won’t be realized
- the risk of leaving my partner at home, still in a full leg brace due to the fall and resultant knee-cap break and snapped tendons she suffered just over a month ago
Shall I go on? I’m sure I could uncover many additional risks that will be involved in and around my week away if I were to spend some addition time doing so, but I don’t care. I could even identify tens, hundreds, or even thousands of risks, and I’d be willing to take them all because I’m SOOOOOO excited about how the finished product will emerge; how it will reflect who and what and how I am; and that I will be learning new skills that I can take along with me for the rest of my life (and perhaps utilize to earn BIG money creating jackets and coats for others).
Let me know if you’re interested in seeing a photo of the jacket when it’s done.
