So, I’m drinking my coffee and reading my email this morning, waiting for my eyes to fully open and my brain to finish booting up, and I come across an email announcing a workshop about getting more traffic to your blog. The workshop is being put on by two recognizable names in the blogging world, reputed to “know their stuff”…so I click through to see the particulars (curiosity always kills this cat…) and what to my wondering eyes should appear but a sales page for the workshop created with MY WP-SALES-PAGE PRODUCT!! Hot damn!
I’m instantly awake…all systems go.
A rush of questions and conclusions scream through my consciousness all at once, each vying to be heard and addressed first:
- Is this really my product??!!
- How’d they get it? Neither of them are on my customer list…?
- It’s on her site, not his…does she do her own stuff (surely not) or does she have a VA (probably so)??
- If I email her, will she have any clue what I’m talking about?
- What would I say, anyway??
- OMG…famous people are using my stuff!!!
Then I calmed down and sent her this email:
Hi [Famous Blogger's First Name],
I was surprised to see my WP-Sales-Page product in use on your sales page for the call you are doing with [Other Famous Blogger] as I don’t have you or him in my customer list. I’m sure it must be either his or your VA who purchased it then, but what I’m more interested in is whether or not you would be interested in being an affiliate for it?
I don’t know how much hands-on experience you have with WP-Sales-Page yourself, but it’s a great product that meets a real need for WordPress users, and I would appreciate any help you could give in getting the word out about it. Affiliates earn 50% commission, and nothing would please me more than seeing a whole bunch of WordPress users I could reach no other way be able to create sales pages without pulling their hair out and being able to send you a big PayPal payment, by extension.
Warmly,
Suzanne
Almost immediately, I got this reply:
Suzanne, I’m baffled by this. I do not know you or your “WP-sales-page” product, and I haven’t purchased it. What on earth are you referring to?
I’m curious… please explain.
In her signature, I noticed a phone number and took a deep breath and dialed.
She answered! (OMG!!)
We had a lovely conversation, and guess who she’s doing a teleseminar about sales pages in WordPress with on June 16th??!!!
Me!
(AAAAAAAAACCCCCCKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!! Breathe…breathe….breathe…)
P.S. I almost forgot…I am also 1 month and 2 days smoke-free.
Suzanne Bird-Harris would like to say she made the leap from Corporate America to web coach / WordPress developer on her own terms...but no, she lost her job after the CEO ran off with the 401K funds and went to jail. So, she started her own business with 3 kids, 2 dogs and a cat in tow on Dec. 6, 2002. It's been a wild ride, worth every risk, and she now proudly deems herself "pyschologically unemployable".

Woo Hoo, Suzanne! Congratulations!
Thanks, MaryAnn.
You know I love this! Risking always brings rewards and you certainly deserve them!
Suzanne-
Congrats on both fronts! You just never know what might happen when you pick up the phone!
And major props for the smoke-free month plus! You rock!
@Laura, I know you do, and thank you very much!
@Liz, that is absolutely true. Some of the best things that’ve happened to me and my business (like…you!) have happened because I picked up the phone. I love that.
You are one of my heroines and mentors. Now I know I’m moving in the right circles since I’ve become acquainted with you. Thank you!
