Today is the birthday of the great Michelangelo. One of my favorite stories about him is that he is said to have created his masterpiece, David, by chipping away from the giant block of stone that which wasn’t David, until only David remained. Wow!
I often tell my clients that this is what we’ll be doing during the coaching process: chipping away what isn’t them, and/or that which no longer fits, until they are more fully, freely revealed. Yes, this can be difficult work. And the Indigo Girls sing of this, “We’re sculpted from youth; the chipping away makes me weary.” But it can also be quite liberating. This is true especially when, in addition to the chipping away, we are also stretching into that which we are – masterpieces!
So my invitation to you today, and to myself, is to look for the places that could be chipped away, and the places that could be stretch into, to more fully reveal our magnificence.
And then, let’s do the chipping and stretching – because becoming more of who we really are – masterpieces – is a risk well worth taking!
